9N, 2N air cleaner questions

I read a recent thread about cleaning an 8N air cleaner. Apparently, the 9N/2N tractors had a different unit. My unit has not been cleaned in possibly 20 years. Does anyone have pictures of the 9N/2N air filter, including the extension to draw air from above the hood? If it would help the discussion, I can take pics of what I have, while it is off the tractor. Tanks for any info.

Mine does not have an extension for the intake. If I remember the top comes off with a wing nut and it has wire mesh on the outside. If I recall inside it had some steel wool like material/baffles? I clean that out with gas or diesel fuel.

I've only cleaned that part a few times over the years.

Every oil change I clean out the bottom oil bath. I could probably get by 2-3 oil changes without cleaning it.

When I bought the 9N back in the 1980s, prior owner thought the motor was bad as it was quickly fouling plugs. I got a good price on it, along with a bunch of attachments. Turns out the oil bowl had a couple of inches of water and crud at the bottom. When running, the oil floating on top, was getting pulled into the carb/intake and fouled the plugs.

9N & 2N air cleaners are different than the 8N as are many other parts. Get out your ESSENTIAL MANUALS, start with the 39-53 MPC to see.

That's the cleaner on my 9N. The body has steel mesh baffle material, you can clean that or buy new. I'm not sure if "new" is Chi-Com crap?

Bottom just dump out old oil, wipe clean, and refill w/oil. Don't overfill or it will suck oil into engine and foul plugs. Original cup inside has a indicator for oil level.

That steel wool like stuff inside is not steel wool. Don't replace with steel wool. You can buy the new correct material from Y.T. It comes out of the cleaner by carefully bending the little tabs that hold the bottom baffle on.

You can put the whole thing in a bucket of diesel fuel and lift and drop until clean

I also live in West Tennessee,90 miles East of Memphis[thank God]. I cleaned mine a couple of times then got the mesh and
replaced it. The old stuff was in fair shape,but the new was,new. The little clips can be trying,especially if one has some age
and arthritis.

ood evening, lha and others:
When I separated all the main air cleaner pieces, then I poured solvent thru the main body, which is where mine has the mesh stuff. The solvent ran right through, while I held the body right side up or upside down. I will call that clean enough! Besides, mine has the extended intake above the hood. No dust is going in there while I am cutting my grass or sitting at a tractor show.
