8n air cleaner

I just brought home another tractor, this 8n thr previous owner stated that it would not run with the air cleaner tube hooked up to the carb. When I got it home thr tractor fired right up and To my surprise isn’t blowing any smoke luckily. But when I took the air cleaner off and took the bottom pan off it didn’t have any oil in it and upon further inspection found that the fouls inside of the air cleaner appear to be plugged. Does anyone have a good way to clean out the filter. If I have to I’ll buy a new one but would rather use what I have if I can get it clean.

That mesh stuff is replaceable in the air cleaner. They sell it right here on YT. It takes two rolls of the stuff to do it. In your situation with that weird previous owner stuff, I would just buy new mesh.

No easy way, except to pull out all the mesh and clean it or replace it. Make sure you don't have wasp nests or other obstruction in the tube.

To remove the mesh, is the lower portion of the cleaner able
to come apart or will I have to cut it apart and then reweld the
air cleaner back together?

Yep, as stated, you don't need to buy a new air cleaner -there's nothing in it that wears and/or needs rebuilding otherwise just a good cleaning, depending on use, every year or so. The 8N Air Cleaner is marked on the cup where to fill with oil. Remove the unit, remove the cup and clean, pry end cap off unit, remove mesh screens and soak in gas or mineral spirits and blow off all debris. Reverse on assembly. There are two rubber hoses, p/n 9N-9652 -one on each end of the air cleaner. One fastens to the upper end of unit and the downward tube to carb. The other hose fastens to the air tube and carb. Secure each with two hose clamps on each, p/n 9N-9653. Get out your ESSENTIAL MANUALS and read religiously. OEM Owner Manual, MPC, and FO-4 manuals are vital tools. There is also a cork gasket, p/n 9N-9623-B under the lip of the unit. That and the mesh filters, p/n 9N-9619, are made and supplied by D. Carpenter and Just8s.

The bottom has a press fit into the sides. Get a good light & if your eyes are like mine, your reading glasses. You will find where the tabs are to pry it open. Once you get it apart, plan on a good soak in your favorite degreaser for a few days. It will clean up .

If you can salvage the old mesh, soak that along w/ the canister. If you need new mesh, plenty of places have it. It comes in a roll. The filter takes 2 rolls. Steel wool won't work.

Hint: Wrap the mesh around the breather tube (it is the same diameter as the tube inside of the air cleaner) Or, use a tube of caulk. Place the breather tube (or caulk tube) against the tube in the air cleaner & slide the mesh off, into the air cleaner. Otherwise, getting that mesh rolled tight & back into the air filter is like getting used toothpaste back in the tube.

Don't forget to replace the cork gasket in the bottom of the canister. If you don't, it will suck air & leak oil between the cup & canister.
75 Tips

After thoroughly cleaning the mesh, inspect the air cleaner down tube (not the tube connecting the air cleaner to the carburetor). It is not uncommon to find the down tube nearly closed off with dirt because most have never been inspected/cleaned.
