Sherman output shaft bearing race issue

My Sherman output shaft shows galling, or pitting, at the race. It looks bad to me. Is this usable ? If not, what's the solution ?

To quote from John Smith's Sherman rebuild How-To which contains a picture almost identical to yours:

"This pitted output shaft is junk and this has quickly become an expensive Sherman rebuild".

Yes. I looked at that. So, I need to spend about 250. for a new one. I wish that bearing race was replaceable.
I would guess that the related bearing should be changed also. Does that seem like a good idea ?
Another thing I'm thinking about...what if I just put a standard input shaft and housing in it ? I don't know what the tractor would be like without the sherman, but I probably could do with out it for now.
This "Quick radiator change and tune-up" is getting complex !

Herein, you state input shaft whereas in your OP, you state "output shaft" both in the caption and the post. The photo looks to be an input shaft.

I have a NOS input shaft for a Sherman combination if you decide that you need one.

Dean-

Not meaning to hijack a thread, but I can't seem to get my email to show up on a post.
I'm looking for some sherman combination stuff. Feel free to email me at:

Dean, sorry for the terminology confusion. I don't know the correct terminology apparently. In my first post I was referring to the galled part on the back side of my Sherman. In the second post I was referring to the long shaft and tube that would replace the Sherman if I were to remove it.
I would be interested in communicating with you about the part you have that I need, but I don't know how that's done on here. Thanks.

My email is open on Classic view only.

That said, the NOS shaft that I have is the input shaft. It extends from the front of the Sherman transmission to the clutch disc and pilot bearing.

Dean.

Yes you can change to standard input shaft/nose cone. Don't forget gasket and shims for preload if needed.

Do you think it would be possible to machine the output shaft race and go with an over size bearing?

If you throw enough money at it possibly. A lot would depend on the availability of an appropriately sized cone. What is the bearing number?

In any event it would not be a cheap repair. A tapered bearing race is hardened to about 60 HRC then ground and polished to a surface finish of 10u inch. If the regrinding and polishing cuts through the original case hardening it would have to be rehardened as well as reground.

Are replacement shafts available and if so what's the cost? I would expect it to be cheaper than an expensive custom repair of this sort.
