resister question

ordered and installed the Yesterday's tractor 12v conversion for my sidemount 8n (8NL103000ALT), also ordered the 12v coil for sidemount part#D8JL12029A, at this time i have the resister installed however am i to understand it's not necessary?

thanks

T gave very helpful advice didn't they? "Use external resistor if needed". Helpful indeed! You can either measure primary resistance of the coil or measure steady state current thru primary and report back. We will go from there.

the 8n is in michigan's upper peninsula so will be heading back up next week, it seems like i bought a 12v coil with an internal
resister before, was wonder if YT 12v coil part#D8JL12029A had this, as of now i have the resister installed

thanks

T does not give you adequate info to know whether or not you need the resistor. If it won't start with resistor, try it without it. That is a pretty good, but not absolute indicator.

it runs great right now with the resistor but i swear i bought a 12v coil with internal resister or at least one the omitted the
resistor before just can't remember, the older i get the more i loose my mind, i will take my tester with me next week, thanks JMOR

I remember back in the hot rod days(mine)when we changed points twice a year
that some coils where marked as internal resistors but were not. It was
recommended to just use a resistor on every coil. (I ran, and still do, Blue
Streak coils) they were listed as heavy duty on Chevy trucks(60-70 series)

Dave, buy a NAPA IC14SB coil or equivalent. No resistor required.
They are cheaper at CarQuest, but still under $20 normally.

Check resistance across posts on coil. 3.5-4 ohms is recommended to keep from frying the points. The ohm reading will tell you if you need an external resistor.

that's what is was!!! thanks Royce, i will keep the resistor in this 8n because i believe it needs to be, i will be taking my multi-meter just for fun
