synchronizing sector gears

I have my shop manual and it gives directions for re-aligning the front end when you bump it out of wack like I did, but I'm not having much luck with moving the left arm backward and right arm forward to disconnect the arms..........What am I missing?

What kind of tractor? If it's a 9n,2n you have to remove the drag links from the steering arms for it to work,or at least
it's easier.
