As always, I truly appreciate the collective wisdom of this forum. I have learned a lot from you all.
The governor on my early '50 8N works, but leaks. I pulled it to check where it's leaking. While in there I figured I might as well look at everything. I cannot tell if anyone has been in there before me.
I'm considering one of the rebuild kits with some extra bits that don't come in the kits, but want to ask the experts before throwing money at it.
The balls have worn an irregular groove on the housing. The components have too much vertical play on the shaft. According to the book the "base (governor fork bearing)"
clearance should be .220 to .230". Mine is .295" with the lower race down; .248" with the lower race pushed up. Measurements are from the top of the fork base to the bottom of the washer/spacers against the clip.
There are already two .010" spacers in use.
With the upper race and balls removed the lower race has .065" vertical play from its stop on the shaft. This helps explain why the balls are hitting the housing.
Questions:
1. Is the lower race supposed to float up and down the shaft?
2. Do I need to shim the lower race to move it up to stay at its stop (the base of the ball retainer) on the shaft?
3. Is it normal to use many spacers to set the fork base's play?
4. I can't tell how much the thrust bearing has worn the upper race and the fork base. Is there a way to tell if they're worn enough to warrant replacing?
5. The instructions I've seen say to seat the drive gear flush with the shaft. Mine is ~.034 down the shaft. Does it matter?
Bonus question!
The mounting ears on the governor housing are not flat. They're bowed out ~.04". This appears to be the cause of one of the leaks. The quick fix it to pack it with a good RTV. The question: Has anyone tried to anneal the ears and work them flat again?
Many thanks!
