1940 9N Fender Bolts

Hi

I want to remove the fenders----BUT the bolts are not budging....on this year the bolts go through the axle casting for the whole distance...6 inches...nuts loosen easily.

Any suggestions....I tried heating the cast but it is such a big heat sink.....used a rose bud torch...they wont turn 1/2 inch impact.

was thinking of grinding material on axle housing to expose bolt to apply penetrating oil....much like the new model axle housing....

I have the wheels off and the axles out for seal and brake work.

I have restored several 9Ns.

On one of them I had to drill the dang bolts out.

Same problem on my 1940. Ended up having to cut the heads off the bolts with a cutting wheel on a 4 1/2 inch grinder to remove
the fenders. This left about 3/8 inch of bolt shaft proud of the housing. Soaked with PB blaster and ATF. Used air chisel with a
blunt V shaped chisel to vibrate side to side, tapped on top of bolt shaft with hammer careful not to peen over, and used the nut
on the bottom with spacer to act as a puller. Vibrate, pick out / blow out any loose rust, tap, tighten puller, soak and repeat.
After a while was able to get them out. The air chisel is what did the trick for me. Good luck.

The 9N, 2N, and early 8N fender to axle bolts are 5/8-18 x 5-9/16" HEX HEADs with lockwasher and hex nut. Figure they've been on for up to 80 years so probably fused up solid with rust. I don't bother much with a wrench. If it won't budge after a few days of soaking in PB, I just get out my NUT SPLITTER (no, not the wife)and break the nut off then can punch the old bolt up thru the fender. FWIW and FYI: If you want to install Stabilizer Bars on your tractor, the brackets require longer bolts, at least 6-1/4". In 1949 Ford changed the fenders and axle trumpets from a round hole to a square hole so they could accept a carriage bolt with the square shoulder. Dennis Carpenter makes the OEM 5/8-18 carriage fender bolts, p/n 355310-KIT but note that you'll need to buy 5/8-11 carriage bolts if using stabilizer bars as they don' make fine thread carriage bolts anymore as Industry Standard.

Having previously tried just about all of the other options, I whizz them off with a cutoff wheel and buy new bolts from DC.

Thanks for your "warning"/advice.

Well I think I am at the stage of having to drill....did you have axle housing off and get onto a drill press/milling machine...I am thinking that is probably the way to get this done.

any recommendation on drill bits that will get the job done?

I would use good cobalt drill bits!
