flushing cooling system when changing the radiator...

My '48 8N's radiator is completely shot, ordered a new one along with hoses and hardware and stuff, from the store at this site...

While waiting for the parts to get here, I got the old radiator off. I stuck a garden hose with a rubber fitting on the top hose connection, and flushed it at high until the water coming out of the water pump was clear.

btw, when I opened the little drain cock on the side of the block near the oil filter, barely a dribble came out. ...ok, went out there again, and took a heavy duty paper clip and poked in that drain valve, and lots of dark grey muddy looking stuff came out and now the dribble is a little better...

SO... is there anything else I can do to better clean out the cooling system? I know some engines recommend doing a 'citrus acid flush' to remove deposits...

Left Coast Geek,Remove the drain petcock in the block and back flush with a 1/4"pipe nipple adapted and attached to your hose..Then flush down the top hose back and fourth to get the junk out.

thanks... I think I'll order a new drain cock as the one on there is pretty crusty.

eek, I couldn't get the old one to budge, I think I'll leave it alone.

On my 9n,while the head was off I decided to try to clean the water jackets with a small round wire brush. I ran into a goo
that kept covering up the brush,so powerwashed the block's jackets through the water pump[which was off]. Lots of
gunk,probably {radiator stop-leak] came out,and out again.

Sir, would you mind telling us exactly where that petcock is? For the life of me I don't see one on mine, or in the books.

I need to flush mine, too.

Thank you!

the block drain is on the left side of the tractor, midway between the oil filter and starter.

my old radiator didn't have a petcock or drain of any sort, however.

That I found, thank you. I was looking for a petcock....

The radiator on my '50 has an old, brass petcock. It was clogged good, too.
