Cant get 2N started

I have a 2N that I can’t get started. I have been working on it for a couple of weeks and it is becoming frustrating.

This past winter I converted it to 12 Volts with new plugs and has run like a champ until now.

It started running rough and I noticed I was throwing antifreeze. Radiator was about 1/2 gallon low. I parked it and the next day I attempted to start it after refilling the radiator . It turns over fine but won’t fire.

I replaced the water pump. And notice the distributor and coil were damp with antifreeze. I did a good cleaning.

I eventually replaced the distributor (it had some corrosion) and the plug wires (the end came off one) The rotor, condenser and points. I also replace the coil as some test I performed (based on several forum suggestions) showed that it may be bad.

The ignition switch has continuity and I am getting 12 v at the post at the top of the coil when the ignition switch is on. I don’t see any spark both with a spark checker and direct ground to the block.

Many years ago when I replaced points I had a direct short causing it not to fire. These points have not been touched until I replaced them just now, so they should knothole been shorted. I am reasonably certain the new points are not shorted.

I am pretty much at wits end, and the wife would like the 2N out of the garage.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Dave,When you replaced the points did you check for continuity across the points when they were closed on the bench?I had a similar problem and the points had to be filed to make contact, just using sandpaper didn't do the trick.I would remove the dist. and check it on the bench first by rotating the shaft and checking for a circuit. It usually is something simple. If you where located close to Northern,Ill. I would drive over and help you out.

Thanks. I will give it a try. It has to be something simple. It wouldn't start however before I replaced the points. I am in mid-Michigan so it would be a bit of a drive for you.

Sir, if I may suggest, when you are checking the switch with your meter, wiggle the switch key and watch the meter readings. Does it stay the same or bounce around on its reading. Good luck, jac

Checked the points as you suggested. They make good contact. Unfortunately it still wont fire. I don't see spark. I rechecked the ignition switch, and it is working fine. No momentary problems when it is wiggled. It does have fuel. Whats weird is it ran until I turned it off after noticing the antifreeze leak. After that it wouldn't fire so it seems like it is electrical. All of the wires I checked have continuity, unless one has worn insulation and is shorting someplace, but the wiring harness was new in January.
