To use Sherman

We recently got an 8N running.
Tractor had a seized engine when we bought it. Had been sitting for a few years, and don't know much history.
We put a recently rebuilt engine in it, along with a new clutch.
When the tractor was split we worked the Sherman and it seemed to work. With rear jacked up we spun input shaft by hand, and could see and feel difference between under, over, and direct.
The shifter seems a bit loose, and now that the tractor is back together we are reluctant to try it.
It's in mid, or direct drive now.
Any advice?

edit: meant to ask about the shifter grommet
Could a missing or worn grommet be the reason the shifter won't stay in place?

There are a few members here with a lot of experience on Shermans, Kirk(NJ) for one. There are manuals available and the CLYMER I&T FO-4 Manual also has a detailed chapter on the SHERMANS.

There are detent mechanisms in the top cover that hold the shifter in position.

I've a NOS Sherman top cover if you determine that you need one.
