Oil Pan Gasket Leak

So I have identified I have a bad gasket on the oil pan of my 1949 8N ford. At first I thought it was my governor, but got that all cleaned up and it is fine. There is actually part of the oil pan gasket sticking out, which is where I assume it might be ripped and leaking.

While I know the correct way to fix it would be to replace it, I don't have the time to tear off the front end and replace.

I had a mechanic suggest that I try sealing it with a "gasket maker" from the outside.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Other ideas? Waste of time?

it might work if you are able to clean the oil out from between the block and the pan. Perhaps by spraying brake kleen in there and letting it dry then try to squeeze the gasket maker into the space. Gasket maker does not work well over oil.

Problem is going to be oil pressure.
There will be no pressure/friction, to
the gasket goop you put on,that will keep
it in place.
Clean it REALLY GOOD WITH DEGREASER AND
THEN SOAP AND WATER TO REMOVE THE
DEGREASER CHEMICALS.
Dry thoroughly and apply with happy
thoughts.
Then get new gasket and educated on
repair procedures.
ROFLMAO couldn't help myself...
FYI just bought 1st tractor in 60 yrs.
1947 8n 8n13325 brake job and axle
seals now, eccentric adjustment on
steering next. Clutch is noisy disengaged

(quoted from post at 16:56:18 07/23/20) I have always wondered if Flex Seal tape would work in this type of situation....

Nah...that's only for glass boats or chicken wire boats.

(quoted from post at 20:17:20 07/23/20) What oil pressure is there between the block and the base?

Mark

None. Crankcase is vented to atmosphere, thus [i:1b84014d29][b:1b84014d29]should be[/b:1b84014d29][/i:1b84014d29] zero air pressure

But.....
Serious blow by, combined with clogged breathers can generate a substantial pressure. As we know, this type of pressure [i:1b84014d29][b:1b84014d29]will [/b:1b84014d29][/i:1b84014d29]find a way out.

It was a rhetorical question and yes there could be some base pressure if the vent in the filler cap gets clogged but that is an easy fix.

I am gonna take it the leak is between the timing cover and oil pan if so YES good RTV used correctly will seal it... If that is where its at you could also section the gasket with a new piece and seal it with RTV...

All the stars in the universe will have to align YMMV...

Didn't think about the clogged breather. I'm new to the 8N world. Are you talking about the oil breather cap with the wire filter element under it right in front of the of the dipstick?

What is the best way to clean those? I might clean it before I start the tractor back up so there is a better chance of the gasket maker holding....

Crankcase breather has a filter that should just be replaced. Can be ordered from this site.

Thanks everyone for their help. What was a steady drip of oil every 2 seconds from a leaky oil pan is now fixed!!!! Comments were super helpful. Cleaned area with break cleaner, then scrubbed with
toothbrush and dawn dish soap. Used an air compressor to blow dry and then applied Permatex 90 minute gasket maker. Due to the lip of the oil pan, I was able to run my finger across the applied area to force
the gasket maker in. I let cure for 7 days. I then cleaned the oil breather cap and replaced filter in oil breather. The leak has completely been fixed!
