Electrical question

Electrical question..

I have a 8n with front mount distributor and its been converted to 12v. The other day I was shredding some land for about 6hrs straight. When I turned it off to take a break and fill back up it had a hard time starting. I had to put some jumper cables on it to start it. Well i loaded it up when I was done and took it home. I tried to start it when I got home and a puff of smoke came from the starter area. I bought a new starter solenoid and nothing. I took the starter off my 9n , nothing. Its like the systems dead. Any thoughts

The first thing to do is, make sure the battery connections are tight and clean. Then measure the battery voltage. It should be 12.6 volts or higher if the charging system is working. If that is all good, get back to us.

The first thing I'd do is verify the wiring is all correct. The 8N and 9N starter motors are different. 9N is a 1-Wire unit with NO SOLENOID. 8N unit is a 3-Wire unit WITH A SOLENOID. You jump started it then got a smoking starter motor??? hhhmmm. Many 12V switch over jobs are done needlessly AND incorrectly. Nothing wrong with 12V just be sure it is wired correctly. On the other hand there's not a thing wrong with the OEM 6V/POS GRN system either. Two things are most misunderstood on Ford Tractors. The first is the 6V/POS GRN electrical setup. The second is the front mount distributor. 90% of all non-starting issues are due to incorrect wiring whether 6V/POS GRN or 12V NEG GRN. As an N-Owner you need to invest in the Essential Manuals - best tools you can buy. Just because you have a 12V battery doesn't mean the system is wired correctly for 12V. Note: If the coil is 6V you will need to add an external 1-OHM in-line resistor for a 12V conversion. If you use a 12V coil, the external resistor is not used but with the 6V and 12V setup the OEM Ballast Resistor is required.
