2n with 8N industrial engine

My tractor has been converted to 12 volts and I've got an electrical problem. Tractor will start and run fine, then it will suddenly
lose voltage and shut down. There is a resistor that reduces volts to coil to 9 volts. When it shuts down I'm not getting any
voltage to the side mount distributor. Do I have a bad coil?

No your coil is working until its electrical connection is broken. You most likely have a bad/loose/corroded terminal connection, an internally damaged wire, or a bad ignition switch.

so you are running a 6 volt coil on 9 volts? I think I would get rid of resistor and install a 12 volt coil. My industrial motor in my 8n has a Magneto on it. 12 volts for cranking and magneto for ignition. works great!

ou just have to do some measuring! Where do you have voltage & where not & under what circumstances? Such as points closed? Points open? Or you can just start replacing parts until it works & if it is something real simple such as broken/corroded wire/connector/insulator. all those new parts still may not fix it. P.s., you do not need a magneto!

Incorrect wiring is the major cause of non-starting tractors regardless if OEM 6V/POS GRN or 12V NEG GRN. You say you have an 8N with the angle mount distributor so let's work with that. Makes no difference if engine is a standard or an industrial BTW. How and what are you using to measure voltage? So, you have a 12V battery. Is there an alternator or does it still have the generator and voltage regulator? Is your 'resistor' an in-line white ceramic two terminal device and how is it wired in?

Thanks for the wiring diagram. Although mine has the later 8N side mount, it is still wired as a 2N. No solenoid. It does have an alternator. The resistor is an old style. I’m thinking I have a wiring mess and may need to rewire it.
Another question, are points and condenser either 6 volt or 12 volt or all the same?

points and condenser are all the same for 6 and 12 volts.
I have two 8n's only one with the magneto. the other one, when I went to 12 volts the wiring was a mess so I replaced the wiring harness and went with a 12 volt coil, all has been good every since.

Yep, I concur, your wiring is all mucked up, and confusing. Can't have a side mount and wire as a 2N system. I'd be open to helping any way I can -my email is open. The angle mount distributor would use the 8N starter motor; 3-wire with a solenoid. The 8N side mount also never used a ballast resistor. Points and condenser are the same -don't care if 6V or 12V. I assume you want to keep it 12V? may as well since you have the alternator and I suspect the 12V battery as well.

Pulled off coil and it’s leaking oil. I have installed a new 12 volt coil.
Will have to run it a while and see what happens.
Thanks everyone for you help.
If this doesn’t fix it I’ll let you know.
