Hydraulic oil change and flushing system

New ownership of 47 8n and I am doing a fluid change on engine and hydraulic's.
Grand Pa not with us and can't ask him.
I remember him telling me to use transmission fluid down carb. for stuck valves.
Will that clean Hydraulic ports and passages too. Run a short time and drain.

Flushing out the hydraulics doesn't get you much. The crud gets hard packed in the base and the only way to get it clean is to drop the pump. Not a big deal to
do; post back if you want some advice on doing that.

Meanwhile, see tips 3 & 4 re the fluid change. Use UTF, not 80/90w especially if you operate the tractor below 32*.

And tell us if you have an 8N or a 2N. A 1947 would be a 2N.

Hydraulic systems are not normally flushed but it is sometimes a good idea. evaluation of the drain oil is a good indicator. Where you are geographically and how the tractor is used have a lot to do with how much moisture gets absorbed by the oil and if sludge tends to accumulate. Modern oils have far more additives which affect moisture retention too.

Your tractor could be a 48 8N built in late 1947 or it could be a 47 2n. 8N has four forward speeds, a 2N has a 3 speed transmission.

What Bruce said. Some of the hands full of sludge doug out of 1950 8N. No flush would ever remove this! But lift was lifting still!

Going by Block serial number 8n13325.
steering not externally adjustable. Eccentric adjustment internally, brake adjust thru backside on plate.
It is a 4 speed transmission. Axle has only an outer seal.

You have a very early 8N, made in 1947. But......to avoid confusion.....I'd just refer to it as a 1948 8N.

Just like a 2020 model year car......that was built in 2019 and purchase in 2019. It's still a 2020 model year.

I recently drained the hyd. oil in my 2N before I sold it and I used Rotella that I got from TSC. I was
honestly amazed how well the lift worked after the swap. I had that tractor for about 20 years and I don't
think it ever worked that well. It is certified for use in the N-series tractors.

It isn't cheap but it's pretty good.
Rotella Ford compatible fluid
