Ignition Trouble

I have a Ford 2N 1942 Tractor that does not shut off when I turn the key to th off position. If the cho-ke is pulled out then the igition turns off. I have re-wired it several ways and receive the same results.

Alternator or Generator charging system?

That is a common symptom with a 3 wire alternator conversion with no isolating device, such as lamp, diode or resistor in the line between switch and exciter post on alternator

Invest in the ESSENTIAL MANUALS then OEM style correct parts after troubleshooting for defects. "I have re-wired it several ways..." but you don't say if 6V/POS GRN or a 12V switch out job. Mucked up wiring is 90% of all non-starting/operating issues. Forget model and year, means nothing, since all 9N & 2Ns after s/n 12500 were the same. OEM 6V will have a 1-Wire/3 Brush 11 AMP 'A' Circuit Generator; the roundcan Cutout Circuit; the OEM Ballast Resistor; front mount distributor with square can coil; a 1-Wire Starter Motor with NO Solenoid; AMMETER; Key Switch; and Neutral Safety Pushbutton Start Switch all wired correctly. A 12V job requires a totally different wiring config. NOTE: 12V wiring requires use of the OEM Ballast Resistor and an external ceramic 1-OHM Resistor in-line as shown if coil is a 6V unit. Discard if 12V coil used.

Agreed. After my 12V conversion mine did the same thing until I put a diode in the voltage regulator "on" circuit.

thanks everyone for the advice, switched some wiring around thanks to the diagrams, and key works, now just need it to run more the a bowl
of fuel , it fills back up and restarts then runs that out and starts all over, new fuel bowl line and carb ?, thanks again for the help.
