8N Spreading Manure

I picked up this Nebraska built Kelly Ryan 10' manure spreader in early May. Paid $100 for it. Tires are poor and it didn't have a PTO shaft. On top of that, the PTO input has an unusual 1" square male end, as opposed to a standard round end. Between the new shaft and the machine shop work to make a fitting for square to round end, the PTO shaft cost over 3X what I paid for the spreader. Around here, though, the going rate for a small PTO operated spreader (New Holland, Minnesota, or JD are the most common) will run a grand or more! So all things considered, I did pretty good. And it sure beats shoveling by hand!

Looking good!

I don't understand, though, having to have an adapter made for the PTO shaft. 1" square is not that unheard of.

"Implement yokes" with a 1" square bore are available for most common series of drivelines, no "fitting" or machine work required.

Your 8N and Manure Spreader look like mine. I have an old New Idea spreader with my 8N and it also has the 1" shaft as well. The spreader is about as big as the tractor and sometimes feels like it is driving the tractor not the other way around.

I spread manure with a New Holland spreader behind an 8N when I was in high school.
My first lesson learned the hard way:
"Always spread with the wind in your face!"

Nice tractor and spreader, Tim! I too find that the 8N has no trouble pulling or powering the machine, but the weight is definitely noticeable. Our barnyard is on a hill, and coming down to the gravel road to head to the field is a bit of an adventure.

Well, shoot, I've never seen one, so either I was had or this was somehow different. I just did what the local ag repair shop told me to do, and he's got a good reputation.

Tim, looks like your chain is way too loose. I let the one on my H&S get this way and it snagged on some frozen ground and ripped it apart. Not fun fixing in 30 degree weather!
