Where is the steering box fill plug located of a 1952 ford 8N? easy to see and use on my 1953 ford jubilee

NOTE: Early Box uses ¼ NPT Pipe Plug; Late Box uses 7/16 hex bolt. Both I modified with a Zerk fitting to allow easier lube insertion. I use 00 Cornhead Grease

Hi Shaun,
I have removed bolts from battery box and bolts on side of housing. Still unable to find the fill port. The tractor is 15 miles from our shop. using it with a bushhog to keep a field cut. Will wait until we bring the tractor home and start removing things to find the fill port.

Chris

Late 52 has a large pan head screw on the front of the steering column above the hood and below the steering wheel. If yours has that screw that is where you put the oil.

One other possibility comes to mind. If you have an aftermarket steering gearbox (Sparex) the oil fill plug is hidden under the dash mounting "saddle" centered 1-13/16" above the lower dash mounting bolt on the left side. You need to make a hole there or remove the dash to access it.

As stated below by Deno, The 52 (only) 8N has a Fillister head screw in the front of the steering column above the dash where oil can be added to the steering gearbox.

No Fillister head screw? It's not a 52.

Dean,
I have owned the tractor for 10 years. I am sure it is an 8N. Has the distributor on the side now in front. I thought it was a 52. Have looked throughly at sides of the gear box and have included pictures of the tractor, steering, and gear box. No screw above hood and below steering wheel.
Chris Looks like I wlll need to remove the dash and dash support. Certainly this was not the way Ford Motor Company originally designed the tractor to check the steering box and add oil. Very easy to locate the fill point on our 1953 ford jubilee. Any other ideas you have would be appreciated.
Chris

Deanostoybox,

I bought the tractor used some time ago. Do not know what the previous owner might have had done to the tractor. He is deceased now. I Think I will have to remove the dash to access the the oil port for the steering box

Thank you for the reply

Yes, it's definitely an 8N but does not appear to be a 52. Either a 51 or, perhaps, late 50.

A photo showing the upper lift arms would be determinative.

In any event, the fill plug is a bolt attaching the battery box (IIRC) on the right side to the steering gear.

FYI After removing the bolt you cannot tell that it is where you add oil. I used a plastic tube to stick in the threaded bolt hole and attached the tube to the lube oil bottle nipple. Keep filling till it over flows!

Dean,

Thanks for taking the time to help me with our 8N ford. Have sent a picture with a red line. Will check where the battery box attaches to the steering box tomorrow. Had the bolt out but was unable to get 90 wt into the steering box
Thanks,
Chris

Dean,

Sending a picture of the right hand battery box attaching bolt. Is this the bolt for adding oil to the gear box?

JB,
Sending You a picture of what bolt I think you told me about for adding oil to the gear box. Please let me know if my picture of the bolt to remove to add oil is
correct.
Thanks, Chris

Tim,

Yes, I did see the picture You sent, thank you. Removed the proofmeter and removed the bolt that picture you sent has a zerk fitting in it. Put the pointed end of my 80-90 plastic container in the bolt hole and was unable to get oil through the bolt hole to the steering box. Will take a small wire from my shop and check to see if the bolt hole goes into the steering box

At the lake and cannot take a picture of my 51. If you use a plastic tube to fill I found it helpful to cut off about quarter inch of the bottom half of the end of the tube. That way you can push the tube all the way in the hole untill it bottoms out and the oil can still come out the bottom cut into the fill hole.

JB,

Sending a digital picture of bolt I think is removed to add gear oil to the steering box. Removed the rpm meter: Put end of my gear oil tube in the hole. Oil
jusst runs out. Probably need to try what you said about using a plastic tube and cutting end off the tube. Is this the bolt you removed from your 8N to add oil
to steering box?
Thanks Chris

Hi Tim,

Including a picture of the bolt I think you removed to add oil to the geacase on an 8N. Put the tiny end of my quart { outboard lower unit style for addinging to the gearcase on an ouatboard} 80 90 wt just runs out the hole. is this the correct place to add oil?

Great topic!

I have two 8N "Operator's Manual"s. Both indicate some point on the right side of the battery box area (right when sitting in the seat), but are not specific about that point. The FO-4 manual is equally vague.

Can someone indicate exactly which bolt needs to be used? A picture would be awesome!

Thank you!

On later 8n right side behind the proofmeter.
The spare column is just sitting on the rear of the tractor for the pic. Oil flowes through the bolt hole following the blue line. It has to make a 90 deg bend into a smaller passage, before draining into the sump.
I haven't tried filling recently, but would expect it to be a slow process.

Hunkydory,
I have looked at a lot of informationr= regarding putting oil in the steering gearbox on an 8N. At one time there was a removable screw on the steering column
to add oil. Screw was below the steering wheel. 8N we have does not have the screw. Picture included seems to be the screw that is removed to add oil .
saw one picture with a zerk fitting in the bolt. I would think using a grease gun would put a lot of pressure on seals in the steering gear. At present we are
using our 8N with a bushhog to cut grass in a field. Will wait until we get the tractor home prior to taking things apart. Steering gear is working good on our 8N
. I just wanted to check oil in the steering gear box

That is correct bolt hole. I think it is Bruce, 75 tips, that recommends using a wire to find the hole. It is a slow process. I found the tube allows air to escape unlike just sticking the lube oil bottle nipple into the hole. I think I added a pint before it started to overflow. Takes a little effort to hold tube and squeeze bottle at the same time!

Lots of bolts. I was referring to the green line bolt! Let us know if you are successful!

JB,
Thanks again for the help. At present time the 8N is keeping a 2 acre
field keeping the orchard grass cut. Will haul the 8N home in
September..
At this time will check further into putting oil in the steering gearbox

John & ejensen,

Thank you for the visual explanations! I've found what you refer to as the oil inlet. It appears to be a mount point for the instrument panel support. I'll pull that bolt and feel around inside.

The oil exit John explained is baffling. I have an early 1950 8N with front mount distributor and my column does not seem to have that drain plug.

Have you any idea where it may be?

Many thanks!

Hi hunkydory, when trying to show the
oil exit hole, I just unbolted the upper
part, took the pic, and added the blue
line. Here is the whole column. The exit
hole is not visable when assembled, it's
on the inside.
I see on John Smiths oldford tractor web
site, in 1949 the steering box was
changed at serial number 216989.
Do you have the newer one?

Hi John,

Thank you for taking the time! I really appreciate your patience with a newbie. :)

Looking at that site I have the "'49-'52 8N steering box". I take it the procedure is to add fluid until it comes back out the entry hole? No way to drain it without removing the steering column?

Thanks again,

Alan

Hi Alan, There is no drain hole to empty old oil. When the fill hole won't take any more oil, thats the correct level, and put the bolt back in. Remember that as oil goes in, air has to escape.
Happy to help,
John
