I have done a couple of 8N brake replacements. I try to think how it would be done in a mass production
environment. I'm sure the brake shoes and assorted hardware were done offline with fixtures and then
bolted to the axle housing as an assembly.
With that in mind, I clamp the back plate in my vice, assemble the shoes with the springs, hook the
springs in place and THEN put the shoes onto the back plate. Try it. (hopefully that is clear as mud)
