Okay now. Education can be fun, at times. This ain't one of them.
So, I called the local parts store (o'really?) and got a $120 price tag for the starter drive and he had to order it. That was fun. I had to help him research it on line and told him the local competitor was pricing that item at $33. I told him Amazon was $25 and change and the same waiting time. I also said if I had to wait for it, I couldn't see paying for the privilege. I went down to local competition and after the AAA discount got it knocked down from $63 to $44.
Interesting that it is a $25 item with free front door delivery from a supplier. Not going to get into that. So a trip back home with my new Sparex starter drive from Napa. Naturally, a new toy needs to get played with and what you do with a new drive? You know you shouldn't but you do it anyway.
'Cuz your mentally challenged.
You extend it.
Then it pops and locks extended.
Yep Garonteed idit.
Now what?
You take apart the old one to see if you can fix the new one.Ha-Ha! Surely you jest! Ain't gonna happen. fudge.Only it ain't fudge your thinking about. How long from Amazon? Wife is gonna be impressed when you tell her. Go in the house and research youtube for a clue. (Hit the link)
Finally get it retracted, install on the starter and velly, velly cawfuwy install it in the tractor. Oh! Did I mention the part where the armature came out of the starter and I had to get 4 long screwdrivers to thread through the brush wires and hold up to install the armature? That was artistic. Going back in the house, I called the wife out to see it start and run.Once again, stick the foot out and aim at it very carefully. Hook up the jumper wire from the battrey to the back of the rusty ballast resistor that has the coil and power wire hooked up to the same terminal.
Convenient eh?
The aftermarket ign switch is also due for replacement. It cranked a few times and started up. Last time it ran the smoke quit after a few seconds. Not this time with the wife to witness my problems. The engine ran a few seconds, faltered and died. Restart with the choke and repeat. Do it again and see smoke coming from the manifold also. Can you also say gasket? Now it is coming obvious that this potentially dead bird might not worth any further finances thrown in it's direction.
At this point, I am resigned to make it run by replacing the ballast resistor and then looking at a carb with 20 years of muck in it, surprised it ran at all. The intake gasket needs replaced, maybe the ign coil while throwing money away and did I mention the new Sparex starter drive is making the starter drag?
Yeah.
Another oops.
The old drive didn't drag, but it didn't disengage either. Back to the video and try it again.
