8n starter drive

Starter drive broke today. I ran to town and got a used one. It looked identical but I didnt measure the diameter. I cant get the blasted thing back in. I moved the oil filter up. I haven't removed the block drain. I left the old drive in town. Anyone know the diameter of spring and retainer?

According to everything I have read I must not be holding my tongue right.
Every video I have watched cuts off when they're installing the starter and then its magically in. I try spinning the gear on a wire wheel but that didnt change anything. I guess I will say a prayer and try again in the morning. Lol.
 
I had to remove the block drain when I installed one with that type of bendix plus move the oil filter housing, then hold your tongue just right.If it don't go in, walk away and wait 20 minutes and try again.
 
I used a die grinder to egg shape the mounting hole on mine 20 years ago. Didn't have to remove or drain anything and starter slid right in. A round file will work also.
 
Both of my 8n's look like they were factory egg shaped. Don't think I would want iron filings in the bellhousing. Even with the egg shaped hole I had to remove drian fitting with the old type bendix. New type went right in. Sometime you just get lucky the first try.
 
I fought it this morning for an hour or more.
I took the petcock out and moved the oil filter.
So I ask again does anyone know the diameter of the spring and keepers?
My hole seems to be oval shape already.

this one came off of one of my 8n. the spring measures 1.988 in diameter. indeed, your hole is elongated
 

Thank you! I will measure mine. I have tried it in several positions with no luck. I have compressed the spring with it in the engaged position and put a stick in it to hold it there but still couldn't get the spring past the flywheel.
 
My spring seems to be the same diameter and have the same amount of coils. I must be trying to hard or something. Thank you again.
 
Ya sometimes we can try too hard, starter as close to block as you can get it and talk to it a bit and when you are not paying attention to what you did, it will slide right in! BTDT.
 
Yep, that's how it usually works. I had it part way in and it got stuck. Hate to use much force. Afraid the keeper will fall in the hole.
 
It finally gave up and went in. I dont know why or how. Wish i could tell the next guy. Everything must've been lined up just right in the universe.
It still doesn't start though. Fires and starter kicks out. I think it's due to low compression. Will try a little oil in the cylinders. It's been sitting a long time.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. If I pull it again I will have a grinder handy.
 
The reason I removed the old spring type bendix was that it would fire once and kick out. Installed new type and no more problems.. My theory is the old style springs geeet too weak and kick out to soon!
 
Maybe next time. It finally came to life. Took awhile to burn off all the stuff I dumped in the cylinders.
