rear axel torque problem

I have had my 1952 8N for about 40 years. I have rebuilt the engine and converted it to 12v, it runs well and has been a good tractor. It needed breaks. I have replaced the shoes. I needed to pull the hubs to replace a few break support plate studs. Problem: When I but the hubs, axle nut and washer back on and tighten them, when I get to about 100lb torque everything binds up and I am unable to turn the axel. This happens on both sides. It should be very simple, what have I forgotten? Thanks

It didn't do this until you opened it up and added/changed something. Look for scrape marks, listen for sounds, compare parts removed, added, replaced. Incorrect parts or incorrect assembly will be the problem.

The axles need a small amount of free play to function correctly. With the new hubs, you are getting too much preload on the bearings. You need to add a shim or two to the new hub to get some free play. There is a good video on Youtube that goes thru the procedure step by step. Just go thru the search for tractor type and job.

a good friend explained to me a great way to set the preload. Jack the tractor up and start on one side of the tractor installing one or two shims and tightening down the hub nut. Then go to the other side and put it together dry with just one shim turn the rear wheels if they both turned in the same direction it's too tight pull the bearing retainer off , add another Sim , tighten it back down do it again add shims until one wheel turns one way one wheel turns the other way. You've got it congratulations.
