8N Transmission slips out of gear

Ok, so while working on the PTO problem, I pulled the shift lever cover off the transmission to check to see if there was anything weird in there (not). I didn't move anything in the transmission and put the cover back on. I have been using it for about an hour. All the gears were shifting correctly but it kept wanting to slip out of first gear as soon as the load let up. Now all of a sudden its like it is stuck in one gear. I thought I got it back together correctly since it was shifting normally but something changed. Does anyone have a picture of how the gear selectors are aligned at neutral for putting the cover on? Is there something I missed when I lowered the cover with the shift lever in the center?

Thanks...

I may have solved the problem. Spent several hours searching on the internet and ran across info about the dent spring that is just under the top cover and at the back of the opening. Checked late last night and sure enough the spring is missing. It must have come out somewhere when I pulled the cover. Don't know where the spring went but I ran a flexible magnetic probe in the transmission sump but didn't find it there. Will order a new spring and hope it isn't in the sump somewhere.

mine slips out of first gear, but all other gears are good. would this spring cause my concern? maybe i can get away with an easy fix. i have not looked into it to see what is messed up.

Usually they don’t pop out but sometime they stick to bottom of the
trans cover when removed they can get knocked off

Based upon my reading, it seems like it will fix the problem. Mine was shifting fine and no slipping out of gear until removed the top cover. I didn't see the spring but when I took the cover back off to check I see that it is missing. The shift rail moves really easily out of position without the spring. I just ordered a new spring but will check again on the ground where I was working to see if it is there... It might have fallen inside or fallen off the tractor when I moved it...

Ok, problem solved. The missing detent spring came in and I replaced it under the top cover. It no longer slips out of gear when I let up on the loading.
