8N shifter boot

I need to replace my rubber boot on my shifter for my 8N. I assume the knob on the shifter just twists off. Is that correct? Don't want to damage it. Thanks

Not sure if process is different for a 8N than a 2N. But, just pull/cut boot off. May need to put a little WD40 on new one to get to pop over knob. To get it to seat over the lip on the bottom, I find it easiest to flip the bottom half or 2/3 of the new boot inside out and once up against the lip, flip it back correct and it will pop on. Took me a while to figure that out. Was never going to be able to pull it over the lip otherwise.

8n knobs just unscrew, that is the easy part. may need to heat new boot in hot water before trying to get it installed. good luck

Is the knob black plastic? If it is, unscrew it.

There is no need to fight getting the correct boot on. The boots for the 2N and 8N are different. They have different part numbers. The correct boot will easily slip on.

This site sells two different boots and both are listed as for all n tractors. just have different bottom hole diameters. Moral of story, measure the old one to see which you need.

Try soaking new boot in hot water first to make a bit more pliable when installing it. 8N's after s/n 263844 used a black phenolic screw on shifter knob; remove and slip new boot on otherwise.

Thanks guys! Love this site. I'm a newby so thank you for your patience. I've wanted an 8N for many years and my wife surprised me with one for Father's Day. Yes, I am a blessed man!

Welcome. Many of us highly advise you to get copies of the ESSENTIAL MANUALS for your 'new' 8N. They are as valuable as any wrench in your tool shed/barn. READ religiously. Know what you are involved with, SAFETY FIRST, and don't start buying and installing new parts, and ask questions - my email is open if you need more help. Is your shifter boot dry rotted, split, or missing now? You need to know if you have an early 8N with the front mount distributor or a later one with the angle (side) mount unit. Also, the OEM Ford electrical system is 6V/POS GRN but some have switched out to 12V NEG/GRN. Either way, if your wiring is not correct, it will cause non-starting issues.

I got a new boot for my 8N and there is no way it would go on as it came in the mail. I actually brought some water to boil with the boot in it. It was so malleable then that I could actually turn it inside out. I rushed outside and slipped it on and turned it right side out over the flange. No trouble at all.

Now here's a hint for people that have to keep a tractor outside. I made these covers out of some plumbing pipe and end caps for it. They work very well to keep the sun and weather off those rubber boots.
