Ford 8n Hydraulics

Hi Folks,

I've got a 52 8(n) that i've been working on for a little bit here. I'm afraid to say i'm at my wits end with regard to the Hydraulic adjustments. The situation is such that when I hook up my sickle bar mower, if I start the raise the implement up to travel, once it comes up a little it goes all the way up. Then when I try to slowly lower it, it just drops all of a sudden, slamming the implement on the ground. I have found that it appears that when the implement is coming up, it is pushing the spring and thus the draft control plunger in and taking the linkage out of adjustment?? If i adjust the top link bar such that it is a little looser when lifted I can regain adjustment control again, but at the cost of making the mower go out of ideal setup. IE the sickle bar is not lifting high enough etc.

I have spent the last month or so researching this site and others looking to get as educated as possible. I have removed the top plate and cleaned and lubricated all the linkages and pump housing and changed hydraulic fluid. I have replaced gaskets and replaced the piston to a jubilee style piston with new o-ring and leather wiper. I have flattened the spring plate and checked the control arm for straightness.

Additionally, I tried to follow the directions in the direction in the original Ford manual to adjust the spring length and dimensions but to no avail. I even tried to find "Zane's Jig" but was unable to find the Jig nor Zane.

The piston does not leak down when the arms are up with clutch depressed or PTO disengaged. It seems as if i just can't get the adjustments correct, and I'm looking for any education or assistance you all may provide. Thanks so much in advance for the help!

I have also replace the Pin in the arm that rides on the cam. That arm and associated linkages all "seem" straight as well from the research and measuring I have done. Tried to adjust quadrant such that implement starts to lift within 1" to top of touch control arm, and also tried to adjust quadrant such that the rocker touches the pump as touch control lever reaches top of travel.

I don't want to assume that I've done anything correct, but wanted to at least provide the best info I could. Again, many thanks.

ook at my last input to this post (6/13/2020). Also, if you don't use draft control, you might simply tighten the big draft spring down real tight, thus preventing that input.
https://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/viewtopic.php?t=1435803 The sudden change from draft to position that I speak ofoccurs as you lower the touch control, because the normal setup is such that position control is in effect for most of the full travel of touch control, but draftis only over a very small range of touch control movement, so as a result when toy move touch control toward lower, it almost immediately switches from draft to position. Implement was full up in draft and next instand wants to go to whatever position control is set to (thus the slam).
 
Unfortunately Zane has passed away and his jig is no longer available. But, I have one you can borrow (includes instructions) if you pay

Thank you for your reply, this makes perfect sense. I have position control with other implements. I think it maybe be how this implement operates and attaches that is causing the issue. However, I think i'm going to contact HCooke on his offer here and try both options. It would be good to know I have it adjusted correctly.

One question on tightening the yoke all the way down such that it removes the ability for compression to add input. If i tighten that yoke all the way down it will compress the spring and push the draft control linkage in. Will that not in effect, do the same as when i'm lifting the mower and the link is pushing that in? I would think that i'd need to then losen the nut on the end of the linkage such that the swivel could free float again. I might be overthinking it. I guess I could alwasy try it, just as you said.

If i tighten that yoke all the way down it will compress the spring and push the draft control linkage in." Just he opposite, you tighten that yoke all the way down it will compress the spring and pull the draft control linkage out. The linkage is attached to the yoke.

ou are welcome. Be careful that you don't put too much torque on the yoke as it transfers to tge draft control plunger/linkage. I generally need a lot of heat to free the rusted fine threads on that yoke.
