Update on 8n rear hub

A while back I asked if anybody had tried the rear hubs 8n1171 offered on this sight and what they thought of them, well I got a few replies both good and bad. I decided to order one hoping the axle was still good and it arrived yesterday. It went on with no problems and was about .100 proud of the the axle splines so it tightened up the way it should with no slop. I am happy although it took 2 weeks to get here, probably because the virus, usually when I order from here it arrives in 3 or 4 days, I was in no hurry so it didn't matter.

That equals a big wrench and a 10 ft piece of pipe for those less technically inclined.

A 3/4" x 30" breaker bar with my 210lbs would be 525lbs but I didn't put my entire weight on it, I am sure it is close to 400 ft lbs

After you use the tractor for a while retighten it and it should be good.

It took more than that to break the nut loose. I wound up with a 10 ft pipe on a 3/4x30 breaker bar and my 250 pounds jumping up and down on the pipe. After 2 cans of penetrating oil and a little heat it finally came loose. After the third revolution, you could spin the nut off by hand.

The discussion is [u:59f2d9d270][b:59f2d9d270]TIGHTENING[/b:59f2d9d270][/u:59f2d9d270] torque. The Ford tightening torque specification is 450 lb-ft and should be applied smoothly up to the final point. That's your 250 dead weight on the end of a 22" bar. No jumping needed or allowed.

The torque needed to break a 70 plus year old fastener loose is a totally different animal and highly variable.

Restoring a 66 year old tractor can be a challenge. I just about cleaned TS out of fine thread bolts, not to mention left hand drill bits and easy outs to remove the broken studs. A very good day when it was completed. Just gave it another face lift to address sheet metal rusting, but used left over paint from 4000 restore. Red/Gray was out of budget for now. Can always repaint later.
