Carb problems, I think???

Was just leaving the garden area when the tractor started sputtering really bad. Was able to keep it running a few more seconds by moving the throttle around before it died. Let it sit a couple minutes and then started it but had to choke it, which I rarely ever do. Checked the gas and the tank is full. Bowl was full. Took it off because it was pretty nasty and cleaned it out. Put it back on (without changing the gasket) and turned the valve back on. The bowl would not fill even with the engine turning. Cracked the nut at the fuel line to the carb connection and fuel started to flow. Loosened fuel connection at the carb and fuel flows good there too.
Could this be a stuck float valve?? I have not had to mess with the carb in the several years I have owned 5he tractor...
Any ideas on what I should do next would be greatly appreciated! Had my wife tow me home from the garden....

Cant edit the post but when I did get it started it ran sputtered really bad like starving for gas and died after a few seconds....

When the carb bowl is full of gas, fuel will not ever flow into the sediment bowl. That is not you problem. But if the sediment bowl is
dirty, the the screen obn the elbow is possibly dirty also. Check fuel flow thru the carb by removing the bolt on the bottom of the carb and
catching the fule in a container. Should fill up a pint jar in a couple of minutes. Post back your findings.

emove plug in bottom of carb bowl & check for flow there. Will that flow fill a pint container it 2-3 minutes or less?

I have been unable to get that screw to turn!! Afraid I'm gonna strip the slot out....
ot the place marked with yellow line & note, but the plug above & left of that which is I believe a 7/16" hex.

My drain has a screw with a slotted head instead of a hex hed bolt...

Anyway, the tractor is running fine again for some reason!! The only thing I did, while hoping for some penetrating oil to help loosen the drain screw (no luck) was pop the distributor cap off and have a look. I did a tune up about 2 months ago. Put the cap back on and awhile later it started right up and is running great!! So, I'm just waiting for it to happen again in the future.....

Thanks for the replies. By the way, is anyone on here doing carb rebuilds these days??

So, yesterday, twice after running for a short time the tractor started running erratically again. I went off to do other things and when I came back, both times it started right up and ran fine until (I believe) it warmed up. Letting it cool down and it would run fine for a little while.
Drove it around this morning until it started sputtering. Put my spark tester on one of the plugs and the spark was very erratic. Thought maybe the coil might be breaking down when it was hot so put the one in from my parts tractor. Cool, different coil and a warm engine and it still ran like crap. Replaced the "new-ish" condenser (from a Tractor Supply tune up kit) with the one I replaced when I did the tune up. Fired right up with good spark and ran the rest of the afternoon. Hopefully that takes care of it......

I'm still around and still rebuilding carbs, but I think that
you have found your problem with the weak/erratic spark.
