I'm not saying that this is your problem but it could be leaking there. No type of gasket or sealer is needed at that point if you install the exhaust pipe and muffler correctly.
The way I installed mine is to put the pipe up to the exhaust flange and see how it fits. A little gentle bending of the pipe might be necessary to get it as close as you can to a good straight fit. When that fit is good as you can get it, place the pipe back up there and place a piece of wood with a bottle jack under it so it's holding it up there. Use the jack and put some pressure it. You may need to take a ball peen hammer and do a little tapping on the flange to get it looking better. Once you get that done, it's time for the clamp. The clamp has a correct way and a wrong way to install it. You want to install it with the larger of the inside flanges on the bottom. If you follow this procedure, you should get a good installation with no leaks.

I would think that your aluminum foil could maybe burn out of there over time.
