Fresh rebuild problem 9N

So got my fresh rebuild installed and ran good for about 10-15 minutes until things went bad. Something caused aluminum cam gear to break. Also bent governor shaft. This is NOT related to the governor bolt contacting the cam gear. No rubbing there. Took it apart and found significant interference between cam gear and timing cover. Thoughts?

ormally there is so much clearance there that Ford had a spring-thrust washer there to take up the slack. What went wrong in your case, I can not determine remotely.

Did the cam gear get on to the shaft far enough? I didn't open that part up on my rebuild this spring, but probably should have.
Hope someone can help you figure our the problem.

Abbby, I had the same thing happen to my 2N. Just like yours, it ran for about 20 minutes and just stopped. When I investigated I found the cam gear broken. In my case I had shimmed the oil pressure relief spring a bit and suspected that that caused an oil delivery problem to the timing gears. So when I put it back together I removed that shim (washer) and it's been good ever since. I know I'll catch heck for this confession. But confession is good for the sole, right?

I will check that the cam gear is on all the way. Now that I think back to last night it does seem that the timing gear area was pretty dry. Not oil all over. I am baffled. I did not do the rebuild so now I need to take it back to him and make him pay to do it all over plus cover my extra parts including a new governor.

Doing a rebuild myself right now on my 49 8n, and saw your post.
Is it possible the two screws that block off the ends of the oil passages were not installed or maybe one was missing ?
Was wondering what your oil pressure was while it was running?
Best of luck and sorry for your issues :(

If you paid to have the full engine rebuilt it's the builders problem. They are the ones that need to diagnose and fix the failure. If you muck around in the engine you will muddy the water and give them cover. Do not start taking it apart yourself. Just send it back to them as is with a bill for your time to R&R their botched work. If they are reputable you will get satisfaction. If not then you can hire a lawyer, try to find someone that is, or undertake it yourself.

Was wondering if you found or heard anything on this yet?
I had the oil pressure question earlier..
Thanks
