OT - Trailer Winch

Finally got a winch mounted on my trailer (its been a long time in the making). Originally I bought an aluminum toolbox that I was going to mount it in, but it was just way too bulky and figured it would get smashed somehow...no matter how careful I was. Sooo...what do you guys use for winch covers? Vinyl, neoprene, other? Want something halfway snug fitting and durable - Harbor Freight 12,000 lb winch. Why can't Harbor Freight just make covers for their winches?!

I suppose if I had a 12K winch made in the "land of almost" I might be needing a cover for it.
Mine was Made in Oregon, land of rain. Mine is currently in the rain and has been for a few years now.
If you live in a road salt state, you might build a box over it.

I had been wanting to put a winch on my Fruehauf tilt-bed for a while for hauling home dead soldiers, and found an old 12K Ramsey with 3/8 cable for $200. Got it mounted up and first use was loading the Deere 70, works perfect. Hung in the open on the front of a Dodge all it's first life

Good morning:
I have a small winch on my trailer, I use winch only occasionally. I have covered it with trash bag/bungee cord. Main problem is, being in a warm climate, dirt daubers make their nests inside my plastic trash bag. I might be just as well off leaving it uncovered, since the trailer is stored in a barn.

What is the dual coil springs thingy on top??

I would make a heavy gage steel half round or half octagon sort of shape with open ends.
Hinged below the fairlead with a hasp or similar fabbed one one the tool box side.
When you cover it trying to keep rain out, you end up creating a greenhouse. And under the cover just seems to speed up everything corroding. An open ended "hood" cover lets air circulate and keep rain off.
Also make your mounting bolts for the winch as wrenchproof as possible be it hand wrench or gas wrench.

Good point about the condensation effect of the cover. I do have some old conveyor belting, I could make a flap that lays down over the top of it.

The springs are attached to a bar that rides across the top of the cable to help the cable feed onto the spool correctly/evenly as you winch in.
