Winter Project Finished

I was posting weekly updates on my project until March or so, then I stalled out on it for a variety of reasons. Anyway I got back on it last month and it is finished!

My sheet metal work is presentable to about 5 feet, but it was full of rust and took a lot of welding and plastic to get it this far. So not perfect. To do it right it needs all new sheet metal.

But I'm happy with it. It will do fine on tractor rides.

My shop is a disaster so next project is a big clean. I lost track of my hours but think I'm about $2000 in new parts and materials. But, don't care. I enjoyed the project and got my mind off the daily turmoil, plus its cheaper than a psychiatrist.

Real nice looking Doug. I had forgotten about your project. What's next after you clean up the shop?

Hey Doug, when you get the garage cleaned let us know.. Im sure some of us could bring you some more "therapy" projects.
By the way It looks awesome..

Thanks all for the kind comments. Next project not so much tractor related. I'm headed to NE Iowa tomorrow to pick up parts to a 1944 PE-95 military generator. They have a flathead 4 willys motor same as MB or CJ2A jeep. I have one in running condition but it was commercialized, so is missing most of the military bits and all the weather covers. My plan is to put it back as close to original as possible. If I can find or fabricate a 4 wheel wagon gear for a searchlight generator, I will set it up to pull with my 48 jeep. Like this:

Technically the PE-95 genset was hauled on a BenHur single axle trailer with a 5/4 ton truck. The jeep won't handle that much tongue load. So the wagon gear will solve that. Still have to be careful towing it, brakes on the old jeeps can barely stop themselves let alone another 1500 pounds. I have a couple farm wagons that could donate to the effort, so long as I can match the wheel track width of the jeep. I'll post some pics in the Tool Talk page when I get into it.

Yes, made the drawbar first. I never really liked the Ford drawbar setup. Had heavy old drawbar off unknown tractor, cut to length welded to 1/2 inch plate with holes to match 8N tapped holes in rear end housing. Then a piece of 2-1/2 x 1 x 3/16 tube to slip over, 2" ball on one side and 1-7/8" on the other screwed together on a short piece of 3/4 threaded rod; with loops welded both sides for chains. Short pin holds it to the drawbar and allows it to flip over. Or removed entirely to use long pin in drawbar. I've made several for friends. But hitch balls with internal threads are getting hard to find. I got these from an ATV dealer.
