starter bendix

I just replaced my starter with a new unit including the Bendix and also a new solenoid. The issue is with the Bendix. when I started the tractor at a low idle, the started didn't sound right so I immediately shut it off. I restarted the tractor and heard the same noise so I shut it down again. It sounded to me as if the Bendix did not disengage and after I pulled the starter out my assumption was verified. I spent a lot of time researching and found a video about this type of Bendix. I must note here that when I received my new starter which included the Bendix already mounted, there was a note that said something to the effect (don't rotate the shaft prior to installation). I did not spin the shaft, just installed the starter. My issue is the Bendix is fixed in the engaged position. The video I found was a {HOW TO} video by one of the parts suppliers and they had the same type of Bendix as mine only it was not mounted on a starter, it was just the Bendix and it was also locked in the engaged position. The video was about what happens if you rotate the shaft,(it locks the Bendix in the engaged position)and how to reset it. The guy inserted a screwdriver through the Bendix so it could spin on the screwdriver and he held the geared end against a wire wheel on a bench grinder and spun it at a pretty high speed and when he put a just a little pressure on the end, and the Bendix released. I'm guessing there must be some type of centrifugal clutch inside. I read a comment on one of the earlier posts about someone with different starter issues, and the comment referred to some Bendix's designed to stay engaged longer. I was thinking about trying to remove the Bendix and try to reset it like in the video, but then I thought if I just put it back in the tractor and gradually increased the idle speed wouldn't that do the same thing. MY concern is over speeding the starter. I dont want to cause any damage and don't want to purchase another starter. Does anyone have any experience or guidance they can offer?

Just start it with the throttle at 1/4 - 1/2 and the Bendix will kick out at higher RPMs. It will disengage at lower RPMs wit use.

I was able to get mine to retract using a wire brush to speed it up on the bench grinder.

Was your Bendix still attached to the starter or did you remove it first. I dont have a wire wheel on my bench grinder at this time but I was thinking that due to the size of the starter and shape of the bench grinder, I might not be able to manipulate it close enough to the wire wheel to make contact.
