Minimum compression to start and run

What is the minimum compression you can have on a Ford 2N engine for it to start and run? If only one cylinder is below that will the 2N still start and run?

I saw compression readings on the neighbors 8n in the 40's. Tractor started and ran but all he could do with it was cut grass. And it would rarely start when hot. Consensus is 90 is the lowest you can expect to get any real work out of them.

since you are asking... it will start and run with zero compression on one cyl. as with what happens with a burnt valve. don't mean you will have power though! plus starting all depends on the ignition and carburetor up to snuff. on any of these old 4 cyl. engines with the above up to snuff you should be able to pull off 3 wires and that engine will keep running on one cyl. tried this many times .

Many are out there running with numbers in the 70's. As Bruce said though, you want around 90 or better to be able and use the tractor hard.

I used to do that with my Thunderbird V8, 1956 Ford Club Sedan when I was working on it. I only got down to 3 cylinders and kept running. Maybe if I had thought about firing order and keeping an even firing, it might have made it down to 2 cylinders.

een low enough that had to be pull started to spin fast enough to finally run.
