Is a balast resistor necessary when doing a 12 volt conversion if the 6 volt coil is replaced with a 12 volt coil. (Ford 8n Tractor)

o, as long asit is a 12v coil labeled no resistor required, such as IC-14 from NAPA. There are coils marked 12v, resistor required.

Does that hold true for a 8n with a front mount distributor?

nly if it has been converted to use a round can coil. To the best of my knowledge, there is no front mount square coil that is a true 12v (no resistor required).

ep, you can get aroud a problem aas long as you never leave key on when stalled. After all, when running the coil current is very low compared to stalled conditions. I would have to look it up, but memory says 25% or less.
