1948 8N with proofmeter

I read where the proofmeter did not come out on the 8n until 1950.
my tractor is supposed to be a 1948 and it has a proofmeter on it. is it possible that someone changed the dash on this tractor. It appears to have been a state owned tractor at sometime because it was originally painted yellow.

Either somebody mixed up their years on the paperwork, somebody deliberately modded it to include the proofmeter, or the tractor is a Frankenstein
with parts from multiple model years. Does the proofmeter work?

If you are basing the year by the serial number on the block, it is quite common to replace the engines when one is having issues.

What do you mean by better steering box. Was the steering improved in some years. How can I really determine what year my tractor is. I know it has the front mount square distributor.

April, 1950 saw may new changes to the 8N the Proofmeter was one. Do you have a front mount or a side mount distributor? Do you have the Essential Manuals? Don't rely on too much for the s/n as it only ID's the block, not the entire tractor as some were swapped out. the was an early 8N steering box and a later 8N steering box and some of those too have been swapped out. What matters are the important details: Front or side mount; early or late box, Proofmeter (this would be with a side mount), and if the electrical system is the OEM 6V/POS GRN setup or has a 12V/NEG GRN switchover job been done. Don't sweat the petty stuff and don't pet the sweaty stuff ... ; > )

yes, the steering was improved.

in my case, figuring out the year/version of everything proved to be pretty straightforward. all the major components point to the same model/timeframe, which is a 2N from january of 1947. i've only got minor mix and match, like my 8N seat :)

here's a great place to start - John Smith's Old Ford Tractor ID page.

Just under your brake shaft are casting dates on the axle tubes. Mine has no proofmeter, early shim type steering box and February/March 1948 axle tubes. By process of elimination I have concluded mine is a 48. Could have all been swapped from another tractor but not likely.
