I'm back, was called away, Question 2, my PTO has a slight drip, was planning on putting a new seal on this spring when I change fluid, is it better to replace the seal or get a new shaft with seal, housing, bearing, instead, heard that the new shaft is of a different size and is better, I don't use it but either, or, doesn't matter to me. Also looking for an OEM carb and distributor, front mount, in good mechanical shape to play around with, spares just in case, my workshop is only about the size of a porta john, my tools are limited, that is why in good mechanical shape. Little machine shops have dried up around here. If I wasn't retired and working where I used to, I could have the shop make a whole new 8N. I'm very good at P.M. taking care of things before they break, playing around with what I can, so what can I say, I'm hooked, I just enjoy the thing.

much simpler to replace the whole shaft - four bolts. a new shaft will be 1 3/8", which matches modern implements, as opposed to the original 1 1/8" shaft.

Do you have a PTO cap/cover? They are effective for masking the PTO leaks. As HFJ said, you can get a new 1-3/8" shaft, seal, bearing, gasket, housing, cover, and retainer ring -the whole deal for $150. Since you don't use the PTO much if at all, a new bearing, seal, snap ring, and gasket can be had for less than $20 if you on a low budget. An OEM 1-1/8" spline can be adapted to a sleeve for a 1-3/8" spline for less than $10. You call...

But I think they take a longer cap because the new shaft has to be longer to be able to hook up the PTO U joint. Not using the PTO just put a cap on and let it fill with oil and dont worry about it. Will dot drip after it fills.

If it were me, and I had the early style PTO shaft (39 -- 43), I'd just replace the whole thing with a new 1-3/8 shaft assembly. As these early style shafts are a pain to re-seal.
If I had the later style (44 -- 52), and it was the 1-1/8 size, I'd probably replace the whole thing with a new 1-3/8 shaft assembly.
If I had the later style (44 -- 52), and it was the 1-3/8 size I'd re-seal it.

If you have the later style, and it is the 1-1/8 size, you may just want to reseal it, if the size doesn't matter to you, or if you have something that requires that size (belt pulley comes to mind).

Both size shafts of the later style take the same seal 9N703, but there are two sizes of the 9N735 collar, that the seal rides on. One for the 1-1/8 shaft and another for the 1-3/8 shaft. I always replace that collar along wit a new seal.
