8n odd serial number

I've purchased a "supposedly" 1952 8n. The number stamped on the raised/machined block on the left side is A-7-348. Not the usual serial number. Is this an industrial or combine engine? Can anyone decipher it? It meets all the other qualifications of a 1952 (proofmeter, side-mounted distributer). But the engine number throws me.

Is that number hand stamped on the usual s/n boss underneath LH head? Serial numbers were NOT cast raised nor machined, and 7-348 may be a date code stamp. Pictures? Don't worry about it -know you have an angle mount distributor, proofmeter, and late 8N -that's what matters. I've never seen an Industrial Angle Mount unit before. Don't sweat the petty stuff, and don't pet the sweaty stuff... ; > ) .

Yes, it's hand stamped on the the raised boss under the head on the left side, but it's in the middle of the engine, not near the front like I've seen pictures of. Curiosity only. Hoping someone knew what it was.

I can't tell yet. This unit has a homebuilt front bucket/loader and blade on the back. the metal tubes for the bucket assembly go all the way to the rear and makes it almost impossible to work or the engine compartment or get the battery out.

Those numerals look like a different tap and are the most clear of any I've ever seen (which is not too many). Is it possible that someone ground off the boss and stamped new numbers for some type of inventory-keeping?

Anything is possible but I wouldn't have a clue why they would do that.

I see the OEM S/N boss as being sanding down/off. The font used on the stamp is not the one used on the original. This was not done by FORD. It is not an Industrial motor -as stated never saw a side mount industrial engine. FORD used some letter characters for numerals and would have a star symbol in the prefix and suffix up to s/n 8N-263844 then used a diamond symbol in all vehicles, not just tractors. I'd say it was some shop's own renumbering system. So you have bragging rights to an unknown shop rebuild code. Again, know you have a side mount distributor and Proofmeter on a late 8N.

Aside from the engine I believe the lift arms are different on a 52 and the steering column gas a screw at the top for lube that earlier didn't have.

By the way, I have a 2N with an 8N industrial engine with a side mount distributor. Also this engine has no sleeves. The serial plate is on back of engine under battery.

I got a 52 8n with an industrial engine with a magneto, had a data plate under battery box. .040 sleeves
