Temporary Grommet

While removing and replacing my 8N51 Quad Throttle Plate I had to use the hand impact screwdriver. The pounding caused the brittle steering column grommet to crumble. Next Winter's project is to rebuild the steering assembly but until then I could not live with the way it looked. Here is some cool stuff I found that worked great. The wonders of modern chemistry! Works great for fuel door bumpers too!

I searched on line for moldable plastic. There is a lot out there that is a thermal set plastic, but that type will also get soft again if heated. This is a chemical set, a little harder then silicone caulk in 24 hours. Once it cures it is permanent. Workable time is 30 minutes. It has the same consistency as plummer's putty and just as easy to mold!
I could not find in a local store!

I bought the pack of 8 and I used 4 of them for the grommet. I believe you could get by with the 3 pack by shaping the grommet a little thinner. The amount of moldable glue in each pack is about the size of a quarter and 1/8 inch thick.
