Ford 2n Question

I have a 1942 Ford 2n 6volt front mount which am trying to rebuild the Front spindles. Presently it has the old style spindle arms using the wedge bolt. When I get new spindles should I get new arms that use the keyway or keep old style arms and wedge setup. How difficult to replace bushings if needed ? Thanks

Good evening: This is not a clear answer, but I must say it all depends. My reasoning: I have a 1941 9N; probably similar parts to yours. An independent shop owner with a nice pile of old parts sold me a replacement spindle/kingpin assembly, and also included the attached I-beam "axle" and also the "knuckle", the hub, bearings, etc. So now the tractor has different year parts on the left and right of the front end. He had new bushings which I installed. My point is, since I do not use this tractor heavily, any parts which fit properly and are not worn out, are OK by me! No one at a show has ever noticed my left and right kingpin/spindle parts are not the same. (I am guessing at names of parts as I type this, my parts books are not available.)

Go with the newer spindles and arms. The wedge design was a poor idea. Bushing replacement is not difficult but unless things have changed since I did mine 30+ years ago you will need to ream the new ones to size after installation.

(quoted from post at 17:52:55 02/10/20) I put new bushings in my '44 4 or 5 years ago, and didn't have to ream them.

Any tips re:getting old bushings out and putting the new ones in without mucking them up? Thanks

Before I retired I had access to a very well equipped shop..

Others shall come on and explain how to do the removal with a Hammer & Chisel...

Bob...Retired resent purchase 2-N..TEA-20 Ferguson etc,..

Installation mandrel..

I'm sure Others shall chime in and suggest other means...

Cost is a factor if you use machined mandrels, pullers, fine thread taps etc,

Nothing wrong with the wedge style and parts from one style does not interchang with the other and I don;t know if different styles of key spindles or not but years ago we broke one spindle on a 44 2N and they kept comming up with a key spindal that would not work with orignal arm. They did finally find correct spindal. The wrong spindal might have been from an 8N or NAA, I dont know. I have a 41 9N widhe bolt and a 44 with the keyed type and both are OK. And when I put new verticak bushings in the 2N did not have to do any reming. But replace the thrust bearing as that will be the most worn part. And they will not get grease lnless you jack the front end up to take weight off spindals so grese can get pushed down there.
