I replaced the differential gaskets in the rear end of my 1949 8N since I needed to replace the oil seals. The axles didn?t show any wear on the ends where they but up together. I got everything back together with permatex ultra blue between all flange/shims/etc. like suggested in http://www.link_disallowed/howtos/pdfs/Replacing-Rear-Axle-Seals-in-8N-Ford-Tractors.pdf
I got the left side back and tightened in, then when I had the right side all put back together and loosely bolted in, I checked the preload like the manual suggested and everything worked well (felt free without any back and forth slop and axles rotated in opposite directions). I tightened down the two bolts that go through the trumpet housing and the two that go through the oil seal, the axle is almost impossible to spin by hand (very tight).
I didn?t have any issues with them wanting to rotate in the same direction, they just don?t want to spin freely by hand.
I assume I need to just start adding shims? Does it matter which side I add them to? I?d prefer to just mess with one side since it?ll be a mess with the permatex ultra blue silicone rtv.
