Clutch Question #2

Thanks for the suggestions related to my earlier request concerning a clutch compressor; I couldn't locate such a device, but your alternative suggestions regarding the utilization of wooden wedges combined with the slow, even back-out of the bolts worked like a charm. Thanks much.

But now I have another question. My 2N shop manual states that the 6 cap screws (part #350433-S) that hold the clutch cover to the flywheel have "a special shoulder, and under no circumstances are ordinary cap crews to be used." However, the hex bolts that I removed from the cover/flywheel didn't look special to me; 2 were high-strength bolts but the rest were not, 2 were larger in diameter than the other 4, and one was longer than the other 5 and was used with 2 lock washers (vs one on the other bolts). My question is, can I just use high strength bolts to install a new clutch, or do I need to locate PN 350433-S bolts? I don't see such part numbered bolts on any tractor parts website, but maybe I overlooked it.

Thanks for your help!

I think you have discovered it's not as critical as the shop.manual would lead you to believe. A quick google search finds reference to ARP 150-2201 clutch cover bolts. Certainly up to the Ford standards for strength

Never tried them but they are the right length and thread pitch/size. Available from a lot of online sellers for around $12 / package of 6.

Here is a bolt from a 8n.

Hope you flywheel threads are ok.

We are both messing with clutches at the moment.
I don't remember if the Ns had dowel pins on the flywheel to locate the PP. See photo.
Many engines did.
I'm putting a tractor together from parts and pieces of 3 different tractors. Who knows what became of those shoulder bolts. I'm just using regular bolts on mine. These are grade 8 because I bought several boxes of bolts a couple of years ago at an auction and had them on hand.
If I had needed to buy bolts for this I would have bought grade 5.
With or without dowel pins I wouldn't worry about having special bolts on yours.

The "special" part is that there is a short shoulder on the cap screw, that normally wouldn't be there on such a short bolt. You can buy a longer bolt that has a bit of a shoulder and trim the bolt to the correct length.

As others have said though, a regular bolt will work fine. Seen it tons of times on clutches.
