I posted here a few weeks ago about the issue I
had removing my belt. I still can?t seem to squeak it
past the lower pulley, I?ll add photos. Is my pulley
out to far possibly?

There isn't much clearance is there. What I would do is, support the front end of the engine with a jack and block of wood, loosen the bolts around the radiator support and wedge the support and front axle assembly away from the engine until you can get the old belt off and the new one on. Tighten everything back up and your done. Over the 70 plus years your 2N may have run into something and bent up the support a little.

I was thinking about jacking it up but didn?t know how to go about it. Thank you.. only thing I?m worried is about is that bottom pulley has quite a wobble when running. Whether that from the belt I don?t know.

If the pulley wobbles it is either loose or toast. If the bolt is tight it is toast - replace it along with the belt.

If you are running a 12V switch over job with an alternator, the alt pulley is different and you need a smaller fan belt. Any 'wobble' is great concern so determine the true root cause problem before you do more serious and often more expensive damage. A wobbling and/or 'squeaky' sound usually means a bad bearing. Check for tightness of pulley and be sure the water pump isn't causing the problem.

Perhaps I am not understanding: If the problem is removing the existing (old/used) belt it can be cut and simply pulled out. Compare the the size of the existing belt to the one you will be replacing it with - perhaps someone put an incorrect (oversize) belt on.

no, u need the larger pulley on the alternator. using a smaller fan belt instead of the proper size pulley on the alternator means that smaller belt will not function as intended on the water pump and main pulley, which will still both be wanting the larger 5/8" belt.

do not use a smaller fan belt. u want a 5/8" belt for this vehicle, regardless of whether it's 6 or 12 volts.

en that would take care of one problem ,but he still has to get a belt back on and from the looks of the picture there's not enough room. Those original pulleys are bad about wobbling my wobbled for years until I replaced it.

Looking at your photos again, it does look like that pulley might be bent, which would cause your belt to wear out prematurely. Do you have the I&T FO-4 manual? It shows in there how to swing the front axle aside for pulling the engine. You might want to do that, pull the axle to one side at this point to gain easier access to the pulley etc.

Swing the front out of the way like Jim says and replace bent pulley and belt, end of problem. I got one that is bent and wobbles and shakes the alternator pretty but so One of these days. I already have new used pulley to install. need nice weather to do it tho!

Absolutely the way to go.....and while you have it torn back (as in the info R Geiger and Jim told you)......take that engine crank handle bolt out an get rid of it.(unless you absolutely need it to start the engine with it) If you keep that crank bolt in there,....you are still not going to have enough room to install a belt.....if you need to do this again.
JMHO!!!!!!

How to replace the fan belt:
1. Old belt can be cut off easily if it hasn't broken already, or just follow Step 2.
2. Loosen the generator, you don't need to remove it completely.
3. Slip the old fan belt off the generator pulley and then wiggle it off the crank pulley.
4. Walk the old belt around the fan blade one blade at a time til it's off.
5. Install the new belt in reverse order by feeding it over the fan blade.
6. Fit the new belt over both pulleys and once satisfied, tighten the generator tensioning device in place.
7. Verify both belts are on their respective pulleys then tighten generator bolt in place.

This method has always worked best for me.

Tim you are wrong

Any 'wobble' is great concern so determine the true root cause problem before you do more serious and often more expensive damage. A wobbling and/or 'squeaky' sound usually means a bad bearing.

You need the proper 5/8" wide pulley for the alternator and a 5/8 with belt that fits the crankshaft and water pump/fan pulley.
Not some skinny 1/2" belt that only fits the alternator pulley.

7. Verify both belts are on their respective pulleys then tighten generator bolt in place.

Just one fan belt on all the OEM N Fords That I have seen.

Yes my alternator pulley is smaller, I have to get a wider pulley. I understand how get the belt off, referring to Tims comment, thank you by the way Tim, it is just the clearance issue I have to get the belt off, I am going to order new fan pulley, should I order a new bearing also to save time due to shipping?
