Is is possible to sheer off the remaining part of the clip without damaging the threads or do I need to take another route?

Thanks!

Get whats left out are you will damage the threads : ( I either split the nut are ground slot over the broken part on the last one I ran into like yours...

I don't think you will drill it out...

I had to remove axle nut on my 8N to replace brakes, and found clip broken off.

I took a piece of CB antenna whip that would slide in the axle groove and ground a chisel point on one end. Tapped it as a wedge to raise the broken end of the clip out of the axle slot.

Success will depend on amount of rust, I admit I got lucky

After almost 2 hours I got it off. With what tools I had I ended up drilling into the face of the nut in 3 places and then using the clip holes as a pilot, drilled from the edge then followed it up with a chisel. I was able to expose the little bit left broken piece but could get the sucker out of there. I got brave and with a 3/4 breaker bar and 2" socket I was able to break the nut loose and remove it. Threads looked good.

As a side note, I used Hobo's method of removing the hub from the axle as an assembly using a press. I put all of the 20 tons the press could give, put heat from a MAP torch on both side of the hub, bared down on the press again and POP!! Thanks Hobo!
