transmission shims

I had a bad bearing in the transmission so decided to replace all bearings an bearing cups. All is fine until installing the rear bearing retainer on the mainshaft. I have used all available shims I have which totals over 1/8 in - 3mm. It takes this much to for it to move required torque. All bearing are seatted firmly. Is this common? The last one did was several years ago. I don?t recall there being this much gap.

I would be scared that something is wrong or out of place.

How did you source the bearings, with some tapered roller bearings, adding a certain part number suffix can change the width of the cone or cup, a possibility, perhaps?

I've done the bearing change on two 8n tranys , most recent was two years ago. Your 1/8 th or more worth of shims, seems about twice what mine were. ( grey hair memory, no notes)

The 8n trans in the picture had a sherman combo up front.

The rear main bearing retainer has what looks like about 1/ 16 worth of shims.
( I'm not declaring this to be the proper amount of shims on all 8ns, just offering one for comparison).

I've not worked on this trans.

You are working on a 8n?

You have it in neutral when testing the rolling torque? ( 20- 35 inch lbs)

I found it. Apparently one of the bearings (front or back) was not seated completely. I removed all shim and tighten the cap and it pressed the bearings into place. Torque is find now with three shims. Thanks for input.
