If you have an original solenoid or a "correctly made" replacement, the small stud will face the engine block.

It will not function if it is connected the other way due to how it's wired internally, one side of the coil always has battery power, and the other side of the coil is connected to the little side terminal stud, which is grounded by the tranny-top neutral safety start button when the button is depressed, activating the solenoid.

If it has been replaced with something else, all bets are off.

If you have a solenoid you believe IS a correct/working replacement and it doesn't work as connected, you could try connecting it the other way before condemning it.

When working with the battery, the solenoid, and the starter, ALWAYS make SURE then transmission is in neutral, on the remote chance something's wrong and the engine cranks unexpectedly.

That's one problem with the Internet -you can get a ton of info but some is correct and some is BS. What style distributor do you have - a front mount or a side mount? I you have the correct Essential Manuals you can't go wrong. The starter motor solenoid is mounted only one correct way. Switch it around and you will let the smoke out. Wire it incorrectly and you will have non-starting issues.
