tuned up tractor runs better than it ever has, only problem is when i go up hill or hook up a plow it loses power, spits and sputters and dies. tractor is a 1952 8n ford. thanks in advance for any help

Check the routing of the plug wires. Timing is 1,2,4,3. Counterclockwise when looking a the distributor cap. 3 & 4 are easily switched.

Can you tell us what brand parts you used? I have had 2 things give the same symptoms: once was inferior new points & the other inferior new plugs.

You say it runs better than it ever did before, but sputters under load. You are describing a lean condition, open up the high speed jet and see if it helps. It also could be a governor problem, but you haven''t mess with that so most likely it's the carb.

I purchased a CARB from "YT" for my 2-N.......
Tractor runs perfectly....running 261 JD Groomer. Every Sunday 15 May > Sept 30...
Pulling 7' three point cultivator....:)

pulling 2 bottom Ferguson three point Plough...:)

I own a 20' tandem axel 14,000 GVW...I installed sway bars as well as stay bars on the three point hitch. Loaded trailer with three cords of fire wood. Tractor had a tough 1 1/2 mile pull up hill. Tractor ran perfectly, was lugged right down in third gear.
Trailer weighs in at 3,200 + lbs on the scales empty.

Not a smart thing to do with such a lite Tractor......however I hear so much about bad carbs...

I have the old carb....had not operated in 30+ years.....I shall disassemble and service someday.....

A carb relies a lot on perfect IGNITION...adequate FUEL. Engine Governor properly operating.....

And the owner of the tractor reading the operators manual..service manual and setting the components properly..

I remember a story concerning hills and 8N's told to me by an old time Ford salesman. A farmer stopped by the dealership inquiring about a demo. Expressed doubts
about the 8N and a 2 bottom plow performing satisfactorily on the farmers hill property. The salesman said will you have a check ready if the tractor does what it needs
to do? The farmer said "Sure." The salesman brought the tractor and plow to the farm and it performed as promised. A few moments later arguing was heard from the
house between the farmer and his wife. Farmer comes out with a check plus handful of cash. The farmer mumbled something about saying goodbye to his fun money.
Evidently, having not previously discussed the purchase with the wife put him over a barrel with her and he needed his pool hall money to cover around a third of the
purchase as the wife was not taking out of the grocery and utility bill money.

Maybe not too applicable to your situation, but I was once bushhogging on my 8N and it was working normally. Then without exhibiting any other symptoms it lost power and wouldn't climb a hill without sputtering and dying. Started fine, idled fine, just no power. Obviously, I had not switched plug wires or changed the carb adjustments. That it started fine seemed to indicate the points were OK. Didn't know what else to do so I checked the spark plugs (carried a new one in reserve in the tool box). Taking the 3rd one out showed a fleck of carbon had welded itself to the gap. Replaced it and all was well. These old tractors will run good at idle on three cylinders, but will be down on power.

all parts are american made and brand new, i have replaced plugs and wires for the second time and the same thing happens, i checked out the governor and it seems fine, has a couple of small flat spots on the balls but every thing else looks good

has a lot more r.p.m. than ever, buries the needle at half throttle, nearly comes back around to 0 at full throttle

I am still thinking a lean condition on the high speed circuit. Have you pulled the drain on the bottom of the carb to check fuel flow to the bowl? If flow is good have you tried turning out the high speed screw a 1/4 turn at a time to see if any improvement?

Going up a hill shifts the gas in the tank and can move debris around in funny ways. I have a hilly property and experienced the same problem. About drove me crazy! Took me several months but finally discovered the wing of a box elder bug was sitting on top of the fuel pick up tube every time I went up the hill and clogging fuel flow. That hole in the tube is very small.

(quoted from post at 14:16:18 01/29/20) It sounds lean. There isn?t by any chance an air leak on the intake pipe, is there?
will check in morning
found out the carb was the problem, dont know how, but rebuilt old carb and it runs great and climbs hills like it should.
thanks to everyone for your help.
