New Ballast Resistor

I recently rewired my 9N converted to 12V to exactly match JMOR's diagram, installing a brand new ballast resistor. More recently I installed an electrical fuel shutoff. When I was testing the fuel shutoff (the first time the key had been on without the tractor running since the rewiring) the ballast resistor started smoking. It also smokes when I turn the key on after I disconnected the fuel shutoff. The new resistor only has a few minutes run time since I installed it. Will the resistor smoke when new? I know they get hot.

Yea, they smoke when new as you found out, but it wouldn't hurt to double check your connections at the resistor.

Using a 12v coil? Any other resistors in the circuit?

It has a 6V coil and another resistor in line. (I was meticulous about following JMOR's diagram.) Looking very closely it is the resistor and nothing else that is smoking.

Thanks

You can't go wrong if you followed JMOR's WIRING PICTOGRAMS. Did you get a 12V coil? Bruce is right -a new resistor will smoke a bit when first powered up. It's just burning off the coating and is normal. Use isn't based on time -will get you years of use. I've removed and used OEM Ballast Resistors again and again and never have had one fail yet. Leaving the ignition key 'ON' when engine is OFF can burn up the points though and sometimes the coil.
