Jacked up back of tractor let out clutch wheels turn like it?s in third
gear real fast this is with the shifter in neutral. Push in clutch wheels
stop shift trans into any gear and try letting out clutch and the tractor
will stall like something binding in transmission . Put back in neutral
let out clutch and spins tires real fast . Anybody know what the
problem might be? Thanks Ernie

Ernie,It sounds like it is hung in 3rd gear.Time to remove the top cover and look for bad/broken shifting forks or shift rails and linkages.

Ernie, what happens when you shift it into 3rd gear? Does that kill the engine too? Removing the top cover on a 2N is a lot of work. The steering column has to be removed or at least freed up to come up with the cover.

The gear oil was horrible chocolate milk lot of water in it. drained it
put some older fluid I had with some diesel to try and clean it out

Bought the tractor at an auction for $400 runs great the owner said sometime the transmission would get stuck in between gears .i took of shifter cover everything looks ok

number on engine block 219960 don?t know if that matches transmission yes the shifter plate came right off so the transmission is from an 8 n

4 forward gears = 8N, 3 forward gears = 9/2N.

assuming it's prefixed with 9N, that serial number is for a 1946 2N engine.

Hi Ernie, sounds like an 8n trans, with a shift coupling that failed to slide back to its disengaged, middle spot. So one of your 5 possible gears is still engaged (when in neutral.)

The top, mainshaft coupling should be visable with the cover off. It should be centered between 1st and 3rd gears.

The countershaft, and reverse shaft couplings are moved by gearshift plates.
They also need to be centered up.

Should be able to identify which gear it is stuck in.

Best to look at / study FO4 repair manual.

Be carefull when testing, letting clutch out too far when bound in two gears =
Broken teeth.
