Needle valve seat

Is it still possible to buy a carb kit with a valve (9N9564) that does not have a rubber type tip? Thanks, Tom/Idaho

Haven't seen one in years, but then I haven't seen a rubber one in years either. Vitcon tipped ones work good. I have had zero problems with them.

I haven?t been able to find an all metal one.

Personally, I *have* had issues with the Viton tip ones sticking even with the little clip, mainly for the first few days.

There seem to be two types of Viton ones, a sort of blocky one and one with some metal trimmed off in a vaguely dart like shape. The blocky ones have posed less of an issue, as the extra mass seems to dislodge them. A little spray lube on the Viton seems to help it not stick when initially installed, and the first few days I use the tractor I shut the fuel off and let the carb run dry so the float needle stays open. It seems to stop sticking after a few days. I?m left wondering if either some of them are not actually Viton, or if maybe the Viton tips are a little more sticky before they?ve been exposed to fuel.

Thank you for answering my question. I have tried two new needles and it still leaks a bit.
Old all metal one did not leak any. Float does not leak and is properly adjusted. I have rebuilt
many Ford carbs without this problem.
Thanks,
Tom/Idaho

It leaks? Huh. My problem has always been that they seal too well and don?t want to release.

How much is leaking out? Are you using matching needles and seats from the same kit? Does the Viton needle tip have a lot of deformation from the seat when you remove it? Is the Viton tipped needle any longer or shorter than your metal needle?

Since you have tried two new needles (needle /seat) which both leak; perhaps the problem lies else where. Maybe take a seat and solder it closed then do a pressure test, look for a cracked carb casting etc... Also, if the float has been changed out (replaced) look for interference with the carb casting - I got the T-shirt for that one. Good Luck

Tom,Also check the seat gasket for a snug fit and tightness in the carb top,as many leak around the threads causing the carb to flood over.

I read years ago that Viton tips sometimes have a manufacturing residue on them that causes sticking. Clean the tip with mineral spirits, WD40, whatever. Haven't had a problem since.
