Food for thought!

Think that 700 dollar tractor
is a real
bargain?....maybe....and then
again....maybe not...I wanted
a 45 2n to restore as a
tribute to my Father...a WWII
veteran.....right
now...roughly 1000 into
machine shop service and
engine parts...I did all the
tear down...and will be
putting it back together....so
for me ..
A labor of love...but not
cheap....consider your
mechanical ability and the
engine and trans condition
.....clutch and gears
good?.....compression
test?.....engine
smoke?.....oil pressure when
hot?....beware of the adds
that say ....ran when
parked?....not saying
never....but a
consideration....Cheers Forum
Chums and happy wrenching!!

I bought a 51 8N for $800 a few years back. Lady said it ran when her father parked it and subsequently died. Had been sitting outside for a couple years. Started right up after a carb rebuild and fluid change. Has 30 PSI oil pressure hot so engine seems good. Tires were rotten and rims rusted out all the way around - another $1300. Still needs new rear hubs, brakes, and front wheel bearings to go with the new tires and rims. Want to replace the 1-1/8 PTO. A little body work and paint and I'll have a nice but unexceptional $3000 8N that I could almost mistake for Grandad's

TOH

PS > The surviving hat rim is still waiting for you

A fellow brought me a 800 some time back and asked me to restore it for him. He said it had been sitting in a field for over 25 years. His Dad bought it new and he didn't have a clue why it was parked. I told him that I didn't feel like it was worth it. He said, I don't care what it costs, dad wants to hear it run again before he dies and he also wants it painted like the newer blue Fords. My thoughts were ??????. We did a complete engine rebuild, new exhaust, new radiator ,new clutch,12V conversion, New wiring ,gauges, 4 new tires and tubes and the list goes on and on. The bill is well over $6000.00 and we are not finished yet and it's not even going to be the right color. But the customer is always right.

This started out as a valve job

but the mission crept. I look at Craig's list nearly every day for something that looks interesting, but the biggest obstacle is the prep for painting. I know that it is very bad to media blast a tractor, but the time involved in a good clean up is daunting.

I tinkered with my 3000 today while driving it back to its shed I thought I invested more money Fix'N up a N than I did on the 3000 : (

I could have had a V8 : )

20 Years ago a 5K was a good deal on a 3000 but not so much today that's the equalizer the price has dropped on newer Fords and what will put the N's out to pasture...

It was fun and the best a poor boy could do I stopped (not quit) fish'N/boating, playing golf and drank'N something had to occupy my time N's filled that void tho it cost me $$$

My boat is coming out of hibernation soon : )

About the, "running when parked", relatively meaningless statement as you know . . .
A lot of the time old trucks and tractors
get parked just because they need more repair than you feel like giving them at that time.

Like with my '51,
Twenty years after parking it I found several things needing attention that were probably contributing factors in my decision to park it and start driving my '47 flat deck around instead.

Leaky rear axle seal, leaky pinion seal
Differential housing caked with oil
Clutch fork ball retaining spring rattling
Yada, yade, yada. :D
