shifter issue

hey folks. as i pulled the tractor into my shop last night to start paint stripping and paint prep, i noticed the shifter rod can pull up and cause the tractor not to shift into or out of a gear selection. looking at the parts diagram there is a pin for the shift arm/rod. i am assuming this pin is damaged or missing. what is required to replace the pin? what is recommended to diagnose the failure? i have a new spring coming because the shifter was a little sloppy feeling, but i am not sure what to remove to gain access to the area for repairs.

Sorry, I should have said that in the first post. It?s a 2N. Judging from the west it appears to be mostly original

Ok thanks. How does it remove? Service manual doesn t cover that much.

I see a ball on the end of the shifter that looks like it s between the shift forks or something. Is that the ball you speak of? I guess I should just take it apart. I m sure I ll see the issue when I have it apart.

If I remember you need to remove the hood and the transmission/steering cover. It's raining or I would go out in the shed and have a look.
After you get the trans cover removed it is obvious. You are correct the manuals do not show this very well. If your are still having
problems tomorrow I will take some picture for you.

I did some digging online and found some pictures and an article where the fellow had the cover welded up and reshaped due to the pin slot being worn. Also he welded and shaped the ball of the shifter. I won t be working on the tractor until Saturday. Don t go out of your way to take a picture. I think I can manage, thank you for the offer though.

I was surprised at the simplicity of this machine. I am younger, 31 and spend most of my wrench time on new computer controlled diesel trucks. Having this old tractor as a project has been pleasantly relaxing to work on. Nice to only have the essentials and no frills to work around.

My hood is off already, about to start prepping for new paint.
Also replacing the drag links on either side. May take the steering housing apart. It s a little loose feeling but the majority of the steering slack is from work ball joints on the drag links.

I pulled the shift boot up this morning before leaving for work. The shift top is fine. The fellow that had a work shift top had an aluminum shift top. My pin is almost worn to paper thin. And looking at the design Hobo is right the shifter can be pulled out of the rack normally.

To get the shifter out it appears I need to remove the steering box as well. Which is fine. Give me a chance to replace the bearings and inspect the shaft gear.

You can replace the pin without removal if the shifter... The pin is knurled on one side drive it both ways to find the knurl once found drive it out from the opposite side of the knurl. It will come out both ways its harder to drive the knurl all the way thru the shifter.

Google 9N7221B I did not say it was a EZ job it can put up a good fight I prefer to get it while the deal is bolted to the tractor...

There should be NO aluminum on that tractor, only 39 and 40 year 9N tractors had any aluminum om them.

my shift top is cast iron. the article a read had an aluminum, his tractor as a 9n. my top is fine, just the pin worn to paper thin. i am very new to this tractor, so much of what i know is from what i have picked up from reading articles online from others experiences.
